Dear Members and Subscribers,

We are happy to share with you the first newsletter of the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission in 2025.

The turn of the year marked a change in the rotating Chair of the Executive Committee of the Shipping Mission. From 1 January 2025, Rikke Wetter Olufsen from Denmark took over the role as Chair after a successful 2024 with the outgoing Chair Sveinung Oftedal from Norway.

As the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission continues to work towards fulfilling its 2030-goals, this newsletter will look back at what has been done and look forward to what will come.

Reflections from the New Chair for the Shipping Mission

”As the incoming Chair for the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission I am excited to look into a crucial year for the international shipping sector. Firstly, the IMO is tasked to adopt global climate regulation for international shipping in 2025. Secondly, the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission will review our strategy on how to achieve the Mission’s ambitious 2030-goals. In order to succeed, I believe active member engagement, communication and result focus will be crucial.”

News from ZESM Member Countries

India (Core Mission Member)

India’s first indigenously developed and constructed Hydrogen Fuel Cell Ferry has been commissioned by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi in February 2024. This vessel is a 24-meter long catamaran vessel with fully air-conditioned passenger space which can carry 50 passengers. It is tailored for urban mobility. This vessel is equipped with Low Temperature PEM fuel cell and Lithium-Ion Phosphate (LFP) battery packs for transient power. Hydrogen gas with 99.997 % purity is stored at 350 bar pressure in onboard cylinders. This vessel has five hydrogen cylinders which can store 40 kg of hydrogen. The vessel is also fitted with solar panel and associated systems to contribute to the auxiliary power supply. This project is a classic example of developing green eco system in marine environment by the utilization of alternate fuel. The vessel was designed and constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited. The hydrogen fuel cell solution has been indigenously developed by CSL-Strategic & Advanced Solutions division by partnering with KPIT for the fuel cell system and IR Class as the marine certification agency.

United Kingdom (Core Mission Member)

The UK earmarks £30 million to decarbonize sea travel, thereby taking an important step towards an era of zero-emission shipping and at the same time boosting growth and creating jobs throughout the UK.

France (Mission Support Member)

France has revised its National decarbonisation roadmap of the maritime sector. Jointly elaborated by the industry and the administration, the roadmap involves the entire value chain in a “well-to-wake” lifecycle approach and associates not only ship-owners but also ports, infrastructure operators and energy producers. The roadmap enables the maritime sector to identify the path, the obstacles (technological, industrial, financial, regulatory), the levers (energy efficiency, energy and infrastructure, sobriety) and the actions to be implemented to decarbonise the French fleet. And it studies the most appropriate approach for deploying these actions. The updated version of the roadmap deepens the analysis by exploring the specific needs of certain fleet segments based on more precise and robust data. It also highlights France’s industrial potential for decarbonising ships.
