Dear Members and Subscribers,
The international public-private partnership Zero-Emission Shipping Mission continuously works to showcase how zero-emission shipping can be achieved. In this version of our newsletter, we look forward to giving some examples on the Mission’s efforts during 2024.
The background for the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission is the fact that international shipping is responsible for 3% of global emissions, with emissions set to increase in business-as-usual scenario. To set international shipping on an ambitious zero-emission trajectory, we need commercially viable, zero-emission ocean-going vessels in the global fleet by 2030. In the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission we strive towards making a difference for the green transition of the shipping sector, and to create awareness on the global need for green shipping.

Mission engagement at Singapore Maritime Week
|
|
The Zero Emission Shipping Mission participated actively in Singapore Maritime Week in April, and hosted a series of events. The Mission hosted a full-day workshop, bringing together the members of the Mission in person – for the first time ever since the launch of the Mission three years ago! The workshop led to fruitful discussions on how we can improve collaboration across governments and private sector stakeholders. Singapore Maritime Week was also an opportunity for the first in-person Executive Committee Meeting. At the Executive Committee meeting, two new projects were approved: “Inherently safer ammonia-fueled ship design” and “Bunkering guidelines for ammonia”.
The Zero-Emission Shipping Mission also hosted a well-attended event with over 150 participants. On the theme “How international public-private collaboration accelerates the green maritime transition” the event was opened with a keynote speech by the Norwegian Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, followed by a panel discussion among the co-leads of the Mission The event also marked two important launches for the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission – the announcement of the Mission's strengthened 2030 goals and the launch of the report "Oceans of Opportunity: Supplying Zero-Emission Marine Fuels at Ports".

To ramp up ambition, and to match the revised IMO targets, the Zero-Emission Mission revised its 2030-goals.
In order to meet the overall goal of achieving 5% uptake of zero-emission fuels by 2030, the targets have been updated from 200 to 600 Ships primarily using zero emission fuels, from 10 to 20 ports enabling zero emission fuels by 2030 as well as a new fuel target of to 16MT HFOe of fuels utilized.

Oceans of Opportunity: Supplying Green Methanol and Ammonia at Ports
|
Under the Zero Emission Shipping Mission, the Global Maritime Forum and Rocky Mountains Institute released a report detailing strategies for ports to lead in green methanol and ammonia bunkering.
The Oceans of Opportunity report demonstrates how ports can meet the International Maritime Organization's 5% zero-emission fuel target by 2030. It predicts the centralization of green methanol in major bunkering hubs and European ports, with green ammonia potentially traded globally, and underscores the low transportation costs of these fuels.
Ports are pivotal in achieving the IMO's emission targets, with the report identifying four port archetypes and providing tailored recommendations based on examples like Singapore and Rotterdam. This framework can aid ports in developing bunkering strategies.

Clean Energy Ministerial Senior Official’s Meeting and Mission Innovation Annual Gathering
|
In May the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission’s Mission Director attended the joint Clean Energy Ministerial Senior Official’s meeting and the Mission Innovation Annual Gathering. The focus was to find synergies and collaboration opportunities between the two organizations towards 2030.
The Mission took part in several knowledge sharing activities and a clear conclusion from the summit is the importance that the Mission continues working on the knowledge sharing on how to address the enormous need for an immense scale up on e-fuel productions for the shipping industry.
The Zero-Emission Shipping has a crucial role to play in raising awareness that the emissions from the global shipping industry do not appear in any national emissions figures. .

The Zero-Emission Shipping Mission seeks to influence and share knowledge where we can.
- September 26 at 8-9am and 4-7 pm CET: Inherently safer ammonia-fueled ship design
On September 26 we will host a webinar to present the findings of our project ”Inherently safer ammonia-fueled ship design”.
The project aims to map the technical solutions available to mitigate higher-tier risks associated with handling ammonia as a fuel to ensure an adequate safety level. The project will also shed light on the challenges and regulatory gaps that must be addressed to accelerate the development of ammonia-fueled ships. To participate, please RSVP to nea.ruokomaki@zerocarbonshipping.com by September 21.
- 1st-4th October: Clean Energy Ministerial15 and Mission Innivation Ministerial9 in Brazil
In the near future we will be present at the joint Clean Energy Ministerial 15th Meeting and Mission Innovation Ministerial9 in October in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil. Together with partners, we will be co-leading two important side events. Please join us for these events, if you are present!
1st October at 4:30 pm: “The need for cross-sectoral collaboration and financing to scale up Hydrogen Valleys for International Shipping and Communities in emerging economies.” Co-led by: MI Zero-Emission Shipping Mission, MI Clean Hydrogen Mission, MI Urban Transition Mission, IEA Hydrogen TCP, European Investment Bank
2nd October at 2 pm: “Scaling Renewable Hydrogen Fuel uptake in Global Shipping” Co-led with: MI Zero-Emission Shipping Mission, MI Clean Hydrogen Mission, UN Climate Champions, IEA Hydrogen TCP, Rocky Mountains Institute
In Brazil, we will also be making announcements on three upcoming studies in 2024. These announcements will also be publicized on our LinkedIn profile.
